THE cream of Northern Ireland's professional golfers will soon be gracing the fairways of Spa for a major competition in which the Club players are invited to participate.
This prestige event - the PGA Northern Ireland Championship - will take place on Wednesday and Thursday October 11 and 12 and competition for the title is certain to be intense.
Day one will take the format of a Pro-Am with each of the Professionals leading a 3-strong team of amateurs. The second day will be reserved exclusively for the Professionals who will carry their score over from the previous round.
While some of the Professionals will be accompanied by members of their own Clubs ladies and gents who would like to take part will be assigned to a team by calling the Spa office at 97562365.
Sponsored by GolfNow the online tee booking service, the Championship is one of the most important events staged at Spa in recent years and Captain John Brannigan said it would provide a wonderful opportunity for his Club to showcase its magnificent course and the attending amenities and facilities offered as part of an overall golf package.
Downpatrick-based Phil Posnett Secretary of the NI PGA said the event offered the public a wonderful opportunity not only to take part and compete in the company of Professionals but the chance to witness the top players in action.
"Spectators are more than welcome and I am confident they will see great golf being played at Spa over the two days," the former Head Professional at Shandon Park, Belfast, said.
Those taking part will include Simon Thornton who has two European Tour victories to his long list of credits and Damien Mooney who will also be among the favourites to take the title.
The Spa Captain who met PGA officials and representatives of the sponsors last week to discuss plans for the Championship said he believed Spa had one of the best parkland courses in the country and was extremely proud of the overall package which was on offer.
"We look forward to welcoming the top NI Professionals to our Club and everyone involved - players, officials and spectators - can be assured of a very friendly welcome at Spa," he added.
